The focus of my dissertation research is on daily pedagogical decisions of school sports coaches in order to analyze larger contemporary concerns about: * youth athlete safety * coach preparation * competition-participation balance in youth sports * gender, ethnicity, and class issues in these practices My multi-method project employs ethnographic participant-observation fieldwork, archival research, and oral history interviews. My four research sites are in the Los Angeles area: two public high schools and two sports clubs, one public and one private. With support from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science I have conducted preliminary field site investigation in Japan and am preparing to conduct postdoctoral research there on the themes developed in my dissertation.

  • Sa Whitley

Sa Whitley is a Gender Studies PhD student, who also received a Master’s in African American Studies. She is a member of the “Academic Abolitionism” working group, supported by the University of California Humanities Research Institute. As a Black feminist who utilizes queer of color critique, Whitley points to finance capital as crucial to the (re)production of precarity in Black women’s lives. Her work attempts to particularize technologies of dispossession and displacement enacted by financial governmentality, and she demonstrates their dependence on gendered anti-blackness.
